The Institute of International Legal Studies (ISGI), scientific body of the CNR carries out research, training and high-level consultancy in the field of international and European law, with particular attention to the field of human rights, environmental protection, the law of the sea, the law of space, and the regulation of bioethical issues.
The main object of the study of the ISGI is the international legal phenomenon, understood not only as the set of rules and institutions governing the life and relations of the community of States, but also as a distinct and superior normative level with respect to the state, capable of influencing the Italian legal system and, therefore, the activity of national institutions and the life of the community present in Italy.
The area of scientific interest of the ISGI includes the dimension of European integration (the law of the European Union and its impact on the Italian domestic level), and the evolution of extra-European (especially Latin American) legal systems.
The objectives pursued by the ISGI are ambitious and articulated: to increase knowledge of law and of international and European organizations, contributing to their regulatory and institutional development; to advance awareness of the importance of the international legal dimension in addressing the problems of contemporary society and the “globalised” world; to contribute to the training of those working in public institutions, social organisations, in business and the world of law.
In carrying out its research, training and consultancy activities, ISGI has developed fruitful collaboration relationships with many research centres and with national and international public institutions. These include: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, OSCE, ESA, World Bank, UNIDROIT and UNESCO.
